[Discussion]

  1. The “Elephant Curve*” is a well-known graph illustrating growth rates by average annual income level worldwide from the late 1980s through the 2000s. This graph exhibits the following three notable characteristics: (1) The growth rate over this period for the average annual income of those in the top 1% is extremely high (over 60%). (2) The growth rate over this period for the average annual income of people in the bottom 70% is also extremely high (over 50%). (3) The growth rate over this period for the average annual income of people in the top 10–20% is extremely low (less than 10%).
  2. The situation described in Item 1 provides an important backdrop to the Global Wealth Distribution (Table 1) shown in this article.
  3. Furthermore, the facts revealed by the Global Wealth Distribution (Table 1) and the Elephant Curve suggest a continuous (relative) economic decline of the middle class in developed countries since the late 1980s.
  4. The situation described in Item 3 can be seen as the foundation for the political divisions currently occurring in Western countries and Japan.
